Parties of God

Is there such a thing as Islamic democracy? Should all democracies look like American democracy?

This insightful article on the Bush doctrine and the rise of Islamic democracy examines the Middle East’s complex political landscape, and how the Bush strategy is disenfranchising the democratic base that exists there. Instead, the US administration is favouring the unpopular governments that support US interests.

According to the article, it appears that it’s the grassroots movements like Hezbollah and Egypt’s Brotherhood of Islam that are the closest thing to democracy in the region, while the governments in power continue to violate human rights or find themselves unable to deliver what the people need.

It’s one of the most interesting articles I’ve read in a long time. A definite must-read for all interested in the Middle East situation.
