News Flash: Covenant is the newest terrorist threat!

I read this InformationWeek article and was somewhat surprised to see the Covenant referred to as a “shadowy, terrorist group”. This says to me one of two things:

  • The author has never played Halo before. As any gamer knows, the Covenant aren’t what you’d typically describe as terrorists. They’re clearly alien invaders.
  • Contemporary political language is really re-shaping the way we perceive conflict.

I suppose propaganda to the effect of demonizing one’s opponent has probably always existed, but it still surprises me that we tend to think of our opponents as less than human, or as being unlike us.

But, of course, Halo is just a video game, and the Covenant really aren’t like us!

Update: Even funnier than the reference to the Covenant as terrorists is the ensuing debate in the article’s comments section!

Battletoads PWNs you

Streets of Rage 2 on Sega GenesisOh man, this list of the top 10 beat ’em ups from ScrewAttack is just brilliant. I haven’t had a hit of nostalgia like that in a while!

The only games on the list I haven’t played are Batman Returns, River City Ransom, and Guardian Heroes.

If you’re unable to watch the entire video, here’s the list:

10. Batman Returns (SNES)
9. Golden Axe (Genesis)
8. Battletoads (NES)
7. Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis)
6. River City Ransom (NES)
5. Guardian Heroes (Saturn)
4. Final Fight (SNES)
3. Double Dragon (NES)
2. The Simpsons (Arcade)
1. TMNT IV – Turtles in Time (SNES/Arcade)

Battletoads on NESThere’s no doubt about it, that is a pretty good list of the best beat ’em ups. Turtles in Time is a fine game, but I’m not so sure it deserves to be #1. In my opinion, Streets of Rage 2 was a better game. Turtles did play awesome, had amazing graphics, and it was a real blast to toss your opponents at the screen, but Steets of Rage 2 with it’s combos, co-op manoeuvres, and the awesome dance/techno soundtrack takes the slight lead.  For that matter, where the heck is Streets of Rage 3??

Another memorable game on the list is Battletoads. It is quite truly the hardest game I have ever played, a heck of a lot of people agree with me. If you can beat it, you really are the man (or woman). But who knows, maybe today’s DDR generation would find the hover bike stage all too easy!
